Communication

One of the most challenging aspects of growing up in a deaf household was communication. My parents used sign language to communicate with each other, and although I was exposed to it from a young age, I didn't fully understand or use it myself until I was older.

This created a communication barrier between us, and I often felt like an outsider looking in. I couldn't always understand what my parents were saying to each other, and they couldn't always understand me. This led to some frustrating moments, but it also taught me the importance of being patient and finding other ways to communicate.

Eventually, I learned to use sign language and became fluent in both spoken and signed English. This opened up a whole new world for me, and I was able to truly connect with my parents on a deeper level.

Resilience

Growing up in a deaf household also taught me the importance of resilience. My parents faced many challenges throughout their lives, both as individuals and as a couple. They were often discriminated against and faced barriers in education, employment, and social situations.

However, they never let their deafness define them. They persevered through challenges, and they raised me to be a strong and independent individual. They taught me the importance of standing up for myself, fighting for my rights, and never giving up on my dreams.

Love

Despite the challenges, my parents' love for each other and for me was always unwavering. They were always there for me, supporting me in everything I did. They taught me the importance of family and the power of love.

I am incredibly grateful for the unique experience of growing up as a child of deaf adults. It taught me so much about communication, resilience, and love. I am a better person today because of my parents, and I am proud to be a CODA.
