A Troubled Childhood

Hunter Biden was born in 1970, the son of Joe Biden, a former vice president of the United States, and Neilia Hunter Biden. His mother and younger sister were killed in a car accident when Hunter was two years old. Biden's father remarried in 1977 to Jill Tracy Jacobs.

Biden has said that he was a difficult child, and that he began experimenting with drugs and alcohol at a young age. He was expelled from high school and dropped out of college. In 1988, Biden joined the Navy, but he was discharged after testing positive for cocaine use.

Addiction and Recovery

After leaving the Navy, Biden's drug use escalated. He lost his job, his apartment, and his car. He spent several years living on the streets, panhandling and stealing to support his addiction.

In 2003, Biden was arrested for possession of crack cocaine. He was sentenced to five years of probation, but he violated his probation and was sentenced to two years in prison. He was released from prison in 2009.

Biden has said that he has been sober since 2014. He credits his recovery to the support of his family and friends, and to the help of a 12-step program.

Beautiful Things

In Beautiful Things, Biden writes about the people and things that have helped him to overcome his addiction. He writes about his family, his friends, his therapist, and his dog. He also writes about the beauty of nature, and about the simple things in life that bring him joy.

The title of the book, Beautiful Things, is taken from a poem by the Irish poet John O'Donohue. The poem begins with the lines:

"In the heart of the ordinary, something waits awakens, Awash in the colors and sounds of longing."

Biden says that this poem reminds him that even in the darkest of times, there is always beauty to be found. He says that he wrote Beautiful Things in the hope that it will inspire others who are struggling with addiction.
